The Universidad Veracruzana (UV) emerged within a stage of educational, economic, and scientific reforms that, since its foundation in 1944, marked it as the first institution of higher education in the state of Veracruz for the preparation of professionals in various disciplines of science and art. In this way, its substantive function is focused on contributing to the academic, scientific, and cultural development of Mexico. From the beginning, the UV established itself as an entity that educates people with critical thinking and comprehensive vision. For instance, during these eight decades of art and culture, the UV managed to consolidate the Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa, the Editorial Directorate, the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa, and the Organización Teatral, all of them key in the dissemination of knowledge and the preservation of cultural heritage. Regarding scientific, technological, and humanistic research, the UV has achieved a significant impact in multiple disciplines through the generation of knowledge in strategic and priority areas for the state, collaboration with national and international institutions, and the development of innovative projects under the precepts of inclusion, social relevance, and educational equity. Thus, eighty years after its creation, the UV has become one of the most relevant higher education institutions in Mexico. It offers diverse educational programs in six areas of knowledge, combining face-to-face, hybrid, and virtual teaching to respond to contemporary needs. Its expansion has been such that its enrollment is almost 96 thousand students, which are distributed throughout the state in five university regions and four campuses of the Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural. It has an academic, administrative, manual, and technical community of 12 thousand people and about 1,040 members of the SNII and SNCA.
As part of the community, the Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia (FMVZ) joins the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the UV. The FMVZ of the UV, founded in 1957, responded to the need of cattle ranchers in the state of Veracruz to have specialists in the field of livestock since, at that time, this bachelor’s degree was not offered in the state.
